2017 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Open to students who:
- Pass the “Modern Standard Arabic- Most Advanced 2” or pass the placement test and succeeded in this level.
- Have experience in using the Internet and the ability to learn how to use our LMS – Moodle.
Mode of Attendance:
Credit hours.
Objective:
- The course consolidates and extends the skills acquired on an Arabic Most Advanced Level 2 course or the level of competence attained by students who have completed over 380 – 410 hours of classroom learning.
- In order to make the transition from Most Advanced to Proficiency easier, there is a consolidation course of 4 units from our main Arabic course, using only Arabic script.
- The Proficiency course is intended for students who have studied Modern Standard Arabic – Most Advanced 2. The focus of this course is on readings of advanced modern prose and of selected texts. Advanced Arabic syntax will be taught both systematically and through identifying and analysing the morphological and syntactic phenomena appearing in the reading materials.
- Teaching methods target language skills of the whole group as well as individual learners, making sure that every student is learning according to their own learning styles.
- Developing the skills of comprehending and using Arabic in speech and writing with guided practice in language usage and authentic communicative activities.
- Challenging but rewarding, the “Most Advanced” course is perfectly suited to those who want to improve proficiency of their understanding of Arabic spoken countries or anyone looking to improve their skills and knowledge of Arabic.
- This course provides a wide variety of texts covering literature, politics, religion, science etc.
- Teaching will cover reading comprehension, text analyses, writing, listening and speaking.
- This course aims to build on students’ previous knowledge of Arabic to help them acquire advanced syntactical and morphological features of Modern Standard Arabic grammar for use in listening comprehension, as well as enhance reading, structure, writing, and speaking.
- Students acquire competencies to help them synthesize and analyse authentic materials. They will become familiar with a range of materials, including cultural, academic and social texts that will help them acquire competency in Arabic.
- The course covers 2 terms to enable learners starting from beginning of Proficiency level to use Modern Standard Arabic for a variety of purposes in a wide range of communicative contexts across the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- In addition, the course enables students to express themselves effectively, accurately and confidently in situations where functional competence in Modern Standard Arabic is expected.
- Furthermore, the course enables students to implement a wide range of grammatical patterns as well as to use fairly sophisticated vocabulary and expressions.
- It also develops students’ ability to process the Arabic writing system accurately and fluently so that they can read and write a range of texts on different topics with ease.
Method:
- The course is taught in Arabic and includes coverage of the four skills of: listening, speaking, reading and writing. This is a good balance between understanding the systems of Arabic grammar and vocabulary as well as developing the skills of comprehending and using Arabic in speech and writing, with guided practice in language usage and use of authentic communicative activities.
- Teaching methods target language skills of the whole group as well as individual learners; making sure that every student is learning according to their own learning styles.
- This is based on 2 Levels. Each level consists of synchronous and asynchronous The synchronous activities consist of approximately 25 hours of interactive classes. The asynchronous activities are used to monitor private studying.
- Class size is limited to five to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.
- Over this entire course, students are required to use the whiteboard on the internet to take quizzes and retrieve assignment updates designed to evaluate your abilities to accomplish the intended learning outcomes.

Course Outline:

Course Outcome:
If the student passes this course with 75% at least, they will successfully move to the next level “Modern Standard Arabic – Proficiency 2”.

Overview of course contents:
- The courses focus on professional topics, linking words and the structure of complex sentences.
- Students are exposed to authentic texts and are taught how to deal with them.
- They participate actively in most informal and some formal exchanges on a variety of concrete topics relating to work, school, home, and leisure activities, as well as to events of current, public, and personal interest or individual relevance.
Recommended Study Habits:
- Going to the Glossary activity and revising some vocabulary with its images or phrases.
- Recording some audio and sending it to the teacher for correction.
- Writing about topics or commenting about dialogues by expressing pictures or summaries on what the teacher asks, like audio or texts.
