2017 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Open to students who:

  • Pass the “Modern Standard Arabic – Beginner 3” or pass the placement test and succeeded in this level.
  • Have experience in using the Internet and ability to learn how to use our LMS – Moodle.

Mode of Attendance:

Credit hours.

Objective:

  • This course builds on the skills acquired on an Arabic beginner’s course consisting of 35 hours of classroom learning. The course covers 2 terms to enable learners of the lower intermediate level to use Modern Standard Arabic in a range of frequently encountered situations using the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Modern Standard Arabic is the recognised means of formal spoken and written communication. It is used throughout the Arabic speaking world on official occasions, in education and in the media.

 

In this class, students will be able to sustain brief oral exchanges and effectively interact in formal situations by requesting or providing information on familiar topics. They will learn to talk about their lives, families, homes, recite days of the week and talk about different hobbies and high schools in the Arab World.

  • The course teaches students to express themselves effectively in common communicative interactions beyond basic survival requirements. The students will begin to work with complex sentences. There will be more emphasis on sentence constructions, reading and composing short paragraphs. It enables students to use a range of phrases and sentence structures as well as frequent vocabulary and expressions. It also develops students’ ability to process the Arabic writing system so that they can successfully read and write simple text. Students will learn to use past and future tenses, the superlative and dual forms, Arabic infinitive and verb patterns, the root and pattern, and how to use an Arabic dictionary.
  • Class size is limited to five students to allow interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.
  • This is based on 3 Levels. Each level consists of synchronous and asynchronous The synchronous activities consist of approximately 25 hours of interactive classes. The asynchronous activities are used to monitor private studying.

 

Method:

  • The course is taught in Arabic and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Authentic audio, video, and reading materials are presented from the beginning, and students are encouraged to be creative with the language in and out of class.
  • There will be guided practice in language usage and authentic communicative activities.
  • This course will consist of a variety of activities (both online and offline) designed to evaluate your abilities to accomplish the intended learning outcomes such as; a Glossary, Single & Folder Choice, Assignments and Quizzes.
  • Independent reading skills are improved in every lesson, giving students confidence and motivation.
  • Positive reading, writing and comprehension habits will be developed for future studies and work. There are two consolidation sessions; one in the middle of the course and one at the end of the course. Consolidation exercises aim at practicing the learned materials through different activities.
  • Teaching methods target language skills of the whole group as well as individual learners; making sure that every student is learning according to their own learning styles.
  • Class size is limited to five students to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.

Course Outline:

Having completed the course, students will be able to:

  • Read and understand the different types of written and audio texts on various topics.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of a substantial range of Arabic vocabulary.
  • Express themselves in Arabic using a wide range of sentence structures and phrases beyond common courtesy and survival requirements.

  • Abdel Rahman E. Alfawzan, Mokhtar A. Hussien and Mohammed A. Fadl, Arabic between your hands “Al-Arabiya bayn yadaik”-(2nd Ed.), Saudi Arabia (KSA).
  • Additional Materials presented from our institute.
  • Over this entire course, students are required to use the whiteboard on the internet to take quizzes and retrieve assignment updates designed to evaluate your abilities to accomplish the intended learning outcomes.

  • Spending time with family, friends or alone.

Course Outcome:

If the student passes this course with 75% at least, they will successfully be moved to the next level “Modern Standard Arabic –Lower Intermediate 2”.

  • Writing the Hammza in the beginning, middle and the end of the word.
  • Writing with stretching of the Hammza.
  • Adjectives.

Course Outcome:

If the student passes this course with 75% at least, they will successfully move to the next level “Modern Standard Arabic –Lower Intermediate 3”.

    Course Outcome:

    By the end of the course learners are expected to converse confidently in the topics they have covered throughout the course.

    They will also be able to read relatively long texts and convey the meaning in their first Language with much accuracy. They will also be able to write a text using the vocabulary and grammatical structures they have learned.

    If the student passes this course with 75% at least, they will successfully move to the next level “Modern Standard Arabic –Upper Intermediate 1”.

Recommended Study Habits:

  • Going to the Glossary activity and revising some vocabulary with its images or phrases.
  • Recording audio and sending them to the teacher for correction.
  • Writing about topics or commenting on the dialogues by expressing pictures or summaries on what the teacher asks, like audios or texts.
